Comfort and Hope

Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law. I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself. Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law. Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law. This I had, because I kept thy precepts. (Psalms 119:49-56)

Thought For Today:
At funerals, ministers and loved ones often turn to the Book of Psalms to find words that bring strength and comfort to those who are grieving. In today’s passage, the Psalmist says, “Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.” Paul shared a similar encouragement with the church at Rome when he wrote, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4). He understood that when we remember God’s Word and spend time in it, we can find hope no matter what we are facing. The Psalmist also wrote, “This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me... I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself... Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.” God’s Word has a special way of bringing comfort to hurting hearts when it is shared with love and truth.
