Dead Flies
Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. (Ecclesiastes 10:1)
Thought For Today:
It's amazing how God, in His wisdom, seems to know what's needed. You might be reading a passage and suddenly He drops a nugget of gold out of nowhere. Solomon, in all his wisdom, is writing about wisdom when, all of a sudden, he includes today's scripture passage. I wondered why dead flies would be in the apothecary's ointment, making it stink, and what that could mean for wisdom. But the real point of this verse isn't in the first part, but in the latter part where wisdom is found. Solomon compared those seeking honour through foolish actions to a fly spoiling valuable ointment: just as a fly ruins the apothecary’s perfume, foolishness can damage one's reputation. True wisdom brings genuine honour and lasting value.
