How To Live A Long Life

What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. (Psalms 34:12-14)

Thought For Today:

If you could choose how long you would live, how many years would you choose? Scripture gives us the examples of Enoch and Methuselah, two men whose lives were remarkable in length. Enoch lived 365 years, and the Bible says that he “walked with God” before God took him. Methuselah lived 969 years, the longest life recorded in Scripture (Genesis 5:21-27).

By our standards, these men lived long lives. Yet the Bible also teaches that a truly good life is not measured only by the number of years we live, but by the way we walk before God. The psalmist shows us how to pursue a life that is both long and good:

·        Keep your tongue from evil.

·        Keep your lips from speaking deceit.

·        Depart from evil.

·        Do good.

·        Seek peace and pursue it.

Solomon also reminds us that “death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). Our words carry weight. They can build up or tear down, bring peace or stir trouble, encourage life or invite destruction. James warns that the tongue, though small, can cause great harm. He compares it to a fire, capable of setting an entire course of life ablaze (James 3:5-6). This reminds us that what we say matters deeply. The responsibility is ours. If we desire a long and good life, we must begin by guarding our words. The ball is in our court, and it starts with the tongue.
