The Stuff That Really Matters

"When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found. Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff"
(1 Samuel 10:21-22)

 Thought For Today

It is striking that Scripture says Saul was hiding “among the stuff.” Many people say they are broke or have nothing, yet they still lock their doors, secure their homes, and set alarms to protect what they own. Even when we think we have little, we still recognize the need to guard our possessions.

But what would happen if we guarded our hearts with that same care? What if we placed spiritual locks and alarms around our inner life to protect it from:

·       worldly influence,

·       outside corruption,

·       compromised integrity, and

·       immorality?

Solomon gives us this wisdom: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Our hearts are worth protecting because the direction of our lives flows from what we allow inside.
