We’ll Leave The Lights On For You
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
(1 Samuel 3:1-4)
Thought For Today:
When we look at the instructions that God gave to Moses, Aaron, and his sons, they were told to never let the lights go out in the temple, nor the fire in the altar (Exodus 27:20-21; Leviticus 24:1-4). But we see that Eli allowed the lights to go out. While reading this passage, I wondered whether he became burned out and stopped valuing church matters, or if people's lack of commitment caused him to lose sight of his calling.
Paul refers to believers as the temple of the Holy Ghost, reminding us to care for ourselves just as priests cared for God's temple. Eli's neglect in keeping the temple lights burning serves as a reminder for all of us to remain dedicated to what we have been called to do, ensuring that the light within our own spiritual lives does not fade.
