Can You Know You Are Saved?
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (1 John 5:10-13)
Thought For Today:
If someone asked whether you are saved, how would you answer? Scripture teaches that it is possible to know. John writes, “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself... He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” The central question is whether you truly have Jesus in your heart.
· Your relationship with Christ: Is your relationship with Him strong? Is He truly first in your life?
· The presence of the Holy Spirit: Paul told the Romans, “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9). This is not merely about a passing feeling, but about knowing that His Spirit lives in you, as it did in the believers in Acts.
· The evidence of a changed life: John also wrote, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this are the children of God made known, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother” (1 John 3:9-10).
Paul makes it clear that without the Spirit of Christ, we do not belong to Him. Eternal life is offered, but it cannot be possessed apart from His Spirit.
John shows that a life born of God is marked by righteousness and love. So ask yourself: Are you doing what is right? Do you love your brother? Jesus Himself is the perfect example of both righteousness and love.
By comparing our lives with the truth of God’s Word, we can examine whether we have eternal life.
