God Reveals His Name
Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land. And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. (Exodus 6:1-3)
Thought For Today:
When we were kids growing up down South, a lot of us had nicknames. Sometimes we didn’t even learn someone’s real name until we graduated from high school. Even today in church, we often call one another “Brother” or “Sister” so consistently that, when introducing someone, we might say, “This is Brother (or Sister) So-and-So,” and never use their first name.
God told Moses, “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.” They had become so accustomed to calling Him “God Almighty” that they did not know Him by that revealed name. So the Lord told Moses that His name was Jehovah—meaning LORD; the All-Existing One.
Jesus asked His disciples, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” (Matthew 16:13). Isaiah had already spoken of the titles people would use for Him:
· “Wonderful”
· “Counsellor”
· “The mighty God”
· “The everlasting Father”
· “The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6)
But what is His name? Paul wrote to the church at Corinth: “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost” (1 Corinthians 12:3).
Do you know Him by name? The angel told Mary, “And his name shall be called Jesus (Jehovah-saves): for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Get to know Him by name—He would like to be on a first-name basis with you.
